January is National Human Trafficking Awareness Month! Statewide and nationwide events will be occurring this month to raise awareness and educate the public about this human rights issue.
A statewide conference, titled “Shedding Light on Child Trafficking in North Carolina,” will be held on January 23 and 24 at the Edenton Street United Methodist Church (228 West Edenton Street) in Raleigh. Endorsed by the National Association of Social Workers and the State Department of Human Services’ Social Services Commission, the conference is being planned by Eastern NC Stop Human Trafficking Now, On Eagles Wings Ministries, and PATH NC.
This conference will have a strong focus on education about the commercial sexual exploitation of minors. Topics during the two-day event will include how to recognize signs of possible human trafficking, how to report human trafficking, how to prevent future human trafficking cases, who else is working on the issue, and explanation of the state laws regarding child trafficking.
The registration deadline for the conference has been extended to January 17. Please visit www.ncagainstchildtrafficking.com for a complete schedule, presenter and speaker bios, and registration/lodging information.
